El Sequé, located in Pinoso in the inland region of Alicante, is a remarkable Artadi project that builds on the area’s centuries‑old winemaking tradition. The vineyards cover roughly 36 hectares and lie on terraces at an altitude of 600–650 metres. Sandy topsoils combined with pardo calizas, a limestone‑rich subsoil, create a distinctly mineral structure and provide natural drainage that encourages the roots to dig deep. These conditions, together with the Mediterranean climate, form the foundation for the characterful wines of El Sequé.
At El Sequé, Monastrell is the central grape variety. Thanks to the dry, poor soils and the relatively high elevation, Monastrell ripens with great concentration, delivering abundant ripe red and black fruit while retaining a fresh, balsamic undertone. Artadi follows a minimalist, biodynamically inspired approach in the vineyard: low yields, respect for the soil and minimal intervention. The aim is to let each parcel and its terroir express itself as purely as possible.
In the cellar, the focus is on achieving balance between concentration and finesse. Vinification avoids excessive extraction, and ageing is carried out with careful barrel selection to build structure and ageing potential without sacrificing freshness. The resulting wines combine power and elegance: rich in ripe fruit and spice, with mature yet refined tannins and a long, mineral finish.
The estate has recently introduced two parcelarios: El Hondonico and Las Morachuelas. These micro‑parcels are bottled separately in very limited quantities and offer an even more precise interpretation of El Sequé’s diversity. El Hondonico is often described as slightly cooler and more limestone‑driven, with finer tannins and elegant red fruit, while Las Morachuelas shows a more concentrated, distinctive profile. Due to their small production, these wines sell out quickly and are especially appealing to collectors and enthusiasts seeking unique terroir expressions.
In terms of gastronomy and ageing potential, the wines of El Sequé pair beautifully with refined dishes. Serve them at around 16–18°C with grilled red meats, lamb with Mediterranean herbs, rich stews or mature cheeses. El Sequé demonstrates how tradition, terroir and modern, respectful viticulture come together in a powerful yet nuanced expression of Monastrell.
