Located in the heart of the Alentejo region and founded in 1973 by José Roquette and Joaquim Bandeira, Esporão has grown into one of Portugal’s most respected and iconic wine producers. Today, the estate stands as a symbol of authentic Portuguese wines, sustainable agriculture and a deep respect for nature.

Where Tradition Meets Progress

While Esporão’s modern history is relatively recent, the story of the estate stretches much further back. Historical landmarks such as the medieval Esporão Tower bear witness to a rich heritage deeply rooted in the Alentejo landscape. This unique combination of tradition and innovation continues to form the foundation of everything the estate does today.

Terroirs That Reflect Portugal

One of Esporão’s defining characteristics is its presence across several of Portugal’s most iconic wine regions. In addition to its historic estate in Alentejo, the family also owns Quinta dos Murças in the Douro Valley and Quinta do Ameal in the Vinho Verde region. Together, these properties offer an impressive showcase of the diversity that makes Portugal such a fascinating wine-producing country.

In Alentejo, the vineyards benefit from warm sunny days, cool nights and a diverse range of soils, including granite, schist and clay. This combination creates wines with depth, structure and distinctive character. Traditional Portuguese grape varieties such as Arinto, Antão Vaz, Alicante Bouschet and Touriga Nacional thrive alongside international varieties that have also found an ideal home in the region.

A Pioneer in Organic Viticulture

At Esporão, sustainability is not a marketing concept but a fundamental part of the estate’s philosophy. Since 2019, all vineyards have been certified organic. The use of pesticides and synthetic fertilisers has been completely eliminated in order to protect biodiversity and maintain the health of the vineyards. The estate also continuously invests in technologies that support responsible energy and water management.

This long-term vision extends well beyond the vineyards themselves. The vast property includes nearly 1,000 hectares of natural forests and montados (traditional Portuguese landscapes) populated by cork oaks and holm oaks. A large reservoir also plays a vital role in the local ecosystem and helps support the estate’s rich biodiversity.

Esporão is far more than a winery. The estate also produces premium olive oils and offers visitors a complete experience through wine tourism, tastings, gastronomy and outdoor activities. A strong connection to the land and local traditions remains at the heart of everything it does.
