Contrada Guardiola expresses Nerello Mascalese from very old vines (around 140 years) in the Guardiola contrada, situated at approximately 800 m elevation. The vines grow on post elliptic pyroclastic volcanic soils about 15,000 years old, composed of pure volcanic ash; the vineyard covers roughly 7 hectares and is the estate’s largest Contrada.
In the cellar, alcoholic fermentation took place in stainless steel and the wine matured for 18 months in large Slavonian oak casks. The winemaking and ageing emphasise structure and purity while preserving Guardiola’s mineral volcanic signature.
Contrada Guardiola opens with a broad, deep bouquet of dark fruit and pronounced spice, with a continuous mineral thread. The palate is well structured, vibrant and framed by tight tannins; the style can be austere at times and demonstrates strong ageing potential. Serve at 18–20 °C in a large tulip glass. Pairs with grilled red meat, game and rich, savoury preparations.
