Discover Elena Walch’s Pinot Nero “Ludwig,” a masterpiece crafted from 100% Pinot Noir and produced from old pergola vines harvested under the Vigna designation since 2002. Made in a limited edition of 12,000 bottles and recipient of numerous national and international awards, including the top prize at the Italian Pinot Nero Competition in 2013, 2020 and 2024, this wine testifies to Elena Walch’s dedication to elegance and complexity.
The Vigna terroir surrounding Castel Ringberg occupies steep slopes between 330 and 400 metres above sea level, composed of calcareous moraines, 30,000 year old gravel and loose marl terraces. Southeast and southwest exposures, cooling Ora winds and the moderating influence of nearby Lake Caldaro create warm days, cool nights and an ideal balance between ripe fruit and refined minerality.
After manual harvest, the must undergoes a traditional fermentation of about ten days in stainless steel tanks. Malolactic fermentation follows partly in Slavonian oak foeders and partly in stainless steel. The final blend matures for ten months in French oak barriques, followed by several months of bottle ageing.
In the glass, the “Ludwig” displays a deep ruby colour. The bouquet opens with elegant aromas of cherry and red berries, a touch of pepper and subtle toasted nuances. On the palate it combines powerful structure with velvety tannins, exceptional freshness and a long, harmonious finish.
Serve the Pinot Nero “Ludwig” with roasted game, poultry in rich sauces or aged cheeses, at a serving temperature of 16–18 °C for optimal enjoyment.
Beyond its aesthetic and sensory qualities, the Pinot Nero “Ludwig” has repeatedly earned recognition from leading professional juries. In May 2025, a panel of 43 oenologists, sommeliers and wine experts crowned the “Ludwig” Best Italian Pinot Noir at the 27th “Giornate del Pinot Nero” with the 2022 vintage, marking the wine’s fourth victory in this prestigious national competition after earlier wins with the 2010, 2017 and 2021 vintages.
