Gaja’s white wines from Piedmont
The Man, the Myth, the legend: Angelo Gaja
Angelo Gaja gained world fame with his wines from Piedmont. This picturesque area, meaning "at the foot of the mountains" and indicating its proximity to the Alps, was part of the French kingdom of Savoy until the 19th century. The special combination of wine and gastronomy and the beautiful hilly vineyards remind many people of French Burgundy.
Heritage of five generations
Angelo Gaja is among the fifth generation of winemakers in his family. It is noteworthy that this family has been one of the first to bottle their wines since 1859. This long tradition of winemaking is carefully passed from father to son, with each generation having brought new fame to the family heritage. Over the years, the Gaja family has increased their influence in Piedmont by gradually adding the best vineyards to their property.
The greatness of contemporary Gaja is due to several factors, including the modern winemaking techniques of the experienced Angelo and his daughter Gaia. Together they make their wines with great passion and dedication. Although Gaja considers each vintage unique, their wines bear a recognizable characteristic: pure, clean elegance. The combination of modern techniques and glorious tradition is crucial to their success.
Gaja's innovative approach is evident in their choice of grape varieties and winemaking methods. Planting cabernet sauvignon and chardonnay in Piedmont shows boldness and drive. Since 1990, they have no longer bottled their renowned cru's Sorí Tildin, Costa Rusi and Sorí San Lorenzo as Barbaresco DOCG, but rather as communal Langhe Nebbiolo DOC. This change underscores their "different" approach and desire for innovation.
Rossj-Bass 2023
Rossj Bass, named after Angelo Gaja's daughter, Rossana, presents itself as a splendid wine with a radiant golden-yellow color. The refined bouquet of citrus fruits and white meadow flowers, with subtle honey accents, reveals an elegant character.Upon tasting, the wine shows itself full and elegant, with pleasant acidity and a subtle hint of vanilla derived from wood. This wine is characterized by depth, complexity, and a lingering finish.
Gaia & Rey 2023
"Behind every great man there is always a remarkable woman," so for Angelo Gaja, there are at least two influential women. His tribute wine, Gaja Gaia & Rey Langhe, bears the names of his daughter Gaia and his mother Clotilde Rey. They symbolize both the past and the future of the vineyard, with Gaia representing the fifth generation and his mother as the guiding force towards quality.Gaja's Gaia & Rey Chardonnay is a refined white wine from Piedmont, reflecting the style of a white Burgundy. After six to eight months of maturation in 225-liter French oak barrels, the wine is bottled. This Chardonnay is both refined and complex, with nuances of apple, citrus, and tropical fruit, fine minerality, and perfectly integrated toasted oak. In favorable years, this wine can easily age in the bottle for a decade or more.
Alteni Di Brassica 2023
Alteni di Brassica, a name that refers to the stone walls surrounding the vineyards ("alteni") and the yellow spring flower from the region ("brassica"), embodies the first Sauvignon Blanc of the area, introduced by Angelo Gaja in 1983. Alteni di Brassica is an elegant white wine with a captivating palette of aromas, including lemon zest, sage, mint, dried herbs, and a subtle hint of tropical fruit. This beautiful wine reveals a bright, saline finish and excellently embodies the unique character of the region. With subtlety and refinement, it pays homage to the rich terroir, a true expression of craftsmanship.
